The most notable difference between Slowking’s and Slowbro’s movepools is Nasty Plot. Slowking can actually utilize it to beat even special walls like Blissey. Slowking is resistant to Ice Beam, and does not really care about being paralyzed by Thunder Wave. With 212 HP EVs, Slowking can Slack Off after two Seismic Tosses (regaining full health), and alternate between Nasty Plot and Slack Off until it maximizes its Special Attack. Then, Slowking can hit the standard Blissey with Surf for a minimum of 63.7% damage. The second attack depends on what you fear will switch into Slowking the most: Ice Beam is for Dragon-types; Grass Knot is for Water-types; Hidden Power Electric is for Gyarados. Calm Mind can be used instead of Nasty Plot to also boost Slowking’s already impressive Special Defense stat.

This is Slowking used as a special wall. Thunder Wave cripples attackers that tend to switch into Slowking, while Light Screen provides better special protection not just for Slowking, but for your whole team.

Much like its counterpart Slowbro, Slowking can run more of an offensive set with no need for setup. Trick cripples Blissey, Snorlax, and other common special walls, and Surf can do huge damage to Pokémon such as Tyranitar. Ice Beam smacks Dragon-types, and Grass-types, the latter of which may want to come in to hit you for super effective damage, namely Celebi.

Hidden Power Electric will hit through Gyarados like a knife through butter, hurting other Water-types too, who may come in to take little from Surf. However, Slack Off is specifically useful after Trick, allowing Slowking to somewhat play a role of a bulky sweeper. Fire Blast can OHKO Scizor, as well as Heracross and Celebi if Stealth Rock is in play (with Choice Specs too).

If you are looking for a bulky, long-lasting user of Trick Room, then you are generally better off going for Slowbro. The Water / Psychic typing and the general orientation of the OU metagame means that physical Defense is usually preferable to Special Defense, and Slowbro holds that advantage over its sibling. That's not to say, however, that Slowking is a bad user of Trick Room by any means. It is still pretty bulky on both the physical and special side, and has Nasty Plot to set it apart from Slowbro. With Nasty Plot boosting its Special Attack and Trick Room allowing it to use its low Speed to its advantage, Slowking makes quite the formidable sweeper, while still being able to support the rest of the team with Trick Room.

Slowking can use Trick Room both for itself as well as setting up for other slow sweepers such as Rhyperior. Nasty Plot and Surf together make Slowking very threatening, with the Water-type's excellent neutral coverage allowing it to hit the majority of its foes hard. The last slot is best filled with an additional attacking move to aid Slowking's coverage. Ice Beam allows Slowking to hit Celebi and Dragon-types for super effective damage, and is generally a good move to be paired with Surf. However, this does leave Slowking walled by Water-types such as Vaporeon and Suicune. This is where Grass Knot works - it hits these other Water-types for big damage, but conversely Slowking will then struggle against the aforementioned Dragon-types and Celebi.

Slowking risks becoming an inferior Slowbro by running Slack Off in the last slot, but it does greatly increase Slowking's longevity, and will usually allow it to get off multiple Nasty Plots. If you feel that you can batter your way through the opposing team with Surf as a solitary attack, or you are looking for a bulky Trick Roomer that can turn offensive at a moment's notice, then Slack Off is a viable choice too.

A Quiet nature minimizes Slowking's Speed while giving its respectable Special Attack a welcome boost. By running a Speed IV of 0, Slowking becomes one of the slowest Pokemon around at only 58 Speed, meaning very little can hope to outspeed it in Trick Room. Leftovers is generally the best item of choice as Slowking tends to stick around for a while, meaning the small recovery every turn actually does end up being quite significant. A more offensive minded item such as Life Orb can be used, but in that case it is recommended that you run Slack Off as a means of recovering off lost HP. Otherwise you'll find that Slowking will be killed off too fast for it to leave an impact on the opposing team.

This is an attempt by Slowking to go physical by employing a Snorlax-like strategy. While Slowking doesn't have a phenomenal Attack stat, it is just enough to effectively make use of Curse. Aqua Tail is for physical STAB and will be Slowking's primary method of attack. Return is used to complete the Water/Normal combination, which gives impeccable coverage. However, Zen Headbutt can be used over Return if STAB is of greater importance than coverage. Avalanche is also a great option for the ability to hit Celebi and the dragons much harder. Slack Off is used with Curse for a reliable recovery move to attempt to get as many Curses as possible and prevents it from being an inferior Snorlax. Unfortunately, Slowking is vulnerable to status such as Will-O-Wisp and Toxic, and so Rest can be used as well, but this isn't the best option since Slowking already has a reliable recovery move.

The EVs primarily concentrate on Slowking's impressive Special Defensive abilities. While the EVs can be easily adjusted to highlight more Special Defense the given spread is suitable for most situations. A few examples of what Slowking can survive with the given EVs are that Slowking will never be 2HKOed by a Modest Porygon-Z's Thunderbolt and only be 2HKOed by a Bold Zapdos' Thunderbolt 20% of the time. Furthermore, Slowking will almost never be 3HKOed by a Bold Celebi's Grass Knot and will never be OHKOed by a Timid Roserade's Leaf Storm. This allows Slowking to set up on many of its common switch-ins.

    Altre Opzioni

Slowking gets access to a few other special attacks, like Brine, Flamethrower and Fire Blast.

Counter can be accessed from the Fire Red/Leaf Green/Emerald Move Tutors, and is certainly worthy of consideration on Slowking, since a lot of players will invariably attack Slowking from the physical side.

In the physical department, Slowking gets access to the risky Belly Drum, but it might be able to pull it off with Slack Off support. It can also Focus Punch, Brick Break and Drain Punch.

Yawn is also an interesting option for Slowking which can cause an unsuspecting opponent to switch.

    EVs

The EVs for Slowking are relatively straightforward. For the special attacker, maximize its Special Attack first, and then concentrate on its HP and defenses, in that order. For the special wall, maximize its Special Defense and give Slowking a lot of HP to be able to survive most neutral special hits, and even a few super effective ones. For the Curse set you'll want to invest to maximize HP and invest in Special Defense while leaving a few spare EVs in Attack. Don’t ever put any EVs in Speed; Slowking will never be able to outspeed anything useful, except by Trick Room or Thunder Wave.

    Considerazioni

Slowking is inevitably always compared with Slowbro. DP tries to distinguish between the two Pokémon by giving Nasty Plot only to Slowking. It has got surprisingly high special defense which, coupled with Slack Off, makes him a decent special wall. However, a special wall with weaknesses to Electric and Grass is not very appealing, and that’s the main reason why Slowking usually gets the shaft for things like Blissey in that regard. Nevertheless, Slowking’s Special Attack is higher than Blissey’s, and its array of special attacks is a lot wider, making him capable of hitting its counters better.

As a special attacker, the fact that Slowking can actually beat Blissey itself one on one is testament to how powerful its special attacks can become. It has got really low speed, though, which makes him switch out of battles more often than not. As a result, Slowking is usually forced to play second fiddle to other Pokémon in this respect too.

    Counters

For the first set, the counters depend on what is the second attacking move. If it is Ice Beam, then most Water-types are counters. If it is Grass Knot or Hidden Power Electric, then Grass-types and Dragon-types are counters. If it is Psychic, then the counters are limited to Empoleon, Water/Dark-types and Grass/Dark-types. Also, if a Pokémon who can hit Slowking hard with a physical super effective move can predict a Nasty Plot, Calm Mind or Slack Off from Slowking, it can switch in and threaten to OHKO Slowking. Tyranitar and Heracross can do this with Crunch and Megahorn respectively. It should also be noted that anything with Taunt will also severely limit the success of the first set, since Taunt would disable Slowking’s boosting and recovery moves.

For the second and third sets, any special wall, like Blissey or Cresselia, is a counter since Slowking can’t boost its damage there.

For the fourth set, any Pokémon who has a powerful move that is super effective against Slowking is a counter if it does not let it set up with Curse. Tyranitar and Heracross are good enough counters again, even though Slowking has a super effective move against both of them. Defensive Grass-types such as Celebi, Tangrowth, and Leafeon can also take on the Curse set reasonably well. Skarmory can Whirlwind out Curse Slowking as well.
